Appendicitis is a medical emergency and typically requires surgical removal of the appendix, a procedure called an appendectomy. If left untreated, an inflamed appendix can burst, causing infection and potentially life-threatening complications like peritonitis (inflammation of the abdominal cavity lining).
Although the appendix doesn't seem to have a vital role in humans, appendectomy is a common surgical procedure and is performed to prevent complications and alleviate the symptoms of appendicitis. Once removed, the appendix doesn't cause any known adverse health effects.
